Obituary for Theodore Gladstone Schafer Jr.
Theodore (Ted) G. Schafer, Jr. passed away "peacefully in his sleep" Sunday, January 1, 2023, at the age of 79 after a brief but devastating illness. Ted was born on April 10th, 1943, to Theodore G. Schafer, Sr. and Rosella "Rosie" McGowan. Ted is survived by his wife of 52 years, Janet N. Schafer and his five children: Linda Paul (Andy), Laura Buhler (Tom), James Schafer (Linda), Lisa Doherty (David), and Theodore Schafer III (Krista); 18 grandchildren, and 25 great-grandchildren.
Ted was raised in Monroe, Michigan along with his four sisters, Linda, Cathy, Judi, and Terry. He was also the proud Uncle to many Nieces and Nephews. Ted was raised in the Catholic faith to include attending Catholic schools in his youth. He applied his faith throughout his everyday life. In doing so, he gained a wealth of lifelong friends (many considered "immediate family") through the Catholic Parishes where he lived, Cursillos weekends as a "Team" member, and Christian study groups. Following in his father's footsteps as a salesman, Ted worked for ACME Automotive, a division of Sherwin-Williams, and was very successful in the sales region he was assigned to (VA, MD, WV). This success enabled him to purchase his own automotive refinishing sales company and then also a spiral cut ham store. Ted was an avid sports fan and loved to golf as much as possible.
A Memorial Service will be held at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Chesapeake, VA at 11:00 a.m. on April 22, 2023. Following the service there will be a "Celebration of Life" gathering from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. Ted will be interred at Saint Stephen's Martyr in Chesapeake, VA (TBD), attended by immediate family only. Please be aware that we will have a tribute box and are asking all attendees to Ted's Celebration of Life to share their favorite memory or story of Ted with us.
