Obituary for J. Carlton George

John Carlton George, 97, of Warsaw, Virginia passed away peacefully on November 19, 2022. He was predeceased in death by his lovely wife of 70 years, Anne Powell George. He is also preceded in death by his parents, David E. George and Gladys S. George, his step-mother, Della J. George, his brother, David E. George, Jr., and a granddaughter, Danielle M. George.

He is survived by his children, John C. George, Jr. (Ann) and J. Michael George (Martha) of Richmond, and a daughter, Anne G. Douglas (James) of Tappahannock, Virginia. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; namely Travis George (Kasey), Christopher George, Rebecca Stevens (Daniel), Samantha Caputo (Chris), Reamy Chalkley (Michael), Carlton Douglas and Jane Douglas. He was blessed by having four great-grandchilden; namely, Ava Chalkley, Piper Chalkley, Grayson George and Connor George. He is also survived by a sister, Laura G. Whitson, of Portsmouth, Virginia; and many nieces and nephews.

Carlton grew up in Portsmouth, Virginia and was an alumnus of Woodrow Wilson High School and Virginia Tech. He loved baseball and played college baseball, semi-pro baseball and coached Little League baseball.
He was employed by Dominion Energy for 41 years of service at several locations. He retired as District Manager of the Northern Neck in l988.

Carlton was active in civic affairs in the Northern Neck area. He was a member of the Warsaw Rotary Club for many years, and was President of the Warsaw Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Warsaw Planning Commission, Richmond County Library Board and Rappahannock Community College Advisory Board.

He was also very active in his church, St. John’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw, Virginia, where he served as a Sunday school teacher and served on the vestry on several occasions. He was named Senior Warden Emeritus.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the many caregivers who helped him in his final years.
A private memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Warsaw, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. John’s Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 1093, Warsaw, Virginia.
