Obituary for Charlotte Josephine Sisson (Hale)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Charlotte “Josephine” Hale Sisson, aka “Mama Joe”, 92, of Warsaw departed her Earthly life on November 18, 2022, after a brave struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born in Farnham, Josephine was the daughter of the late Charles C. Hale and the late Rachael Anna Davis Hale. She was the widow of Wallace Leonard Sisson. Josephine was a lifelong resident of the Northern Neck and the matriarch of a huge and loving family. She will be deeply missed.

Josephine had a long career with the Virginia Elastic Corporation and in her retirement years began a new career as a home health caregiver. She loved tending to her garden – both flowers and vegetables and would preserve and can many of the things that she grew. Josephine made the best potato salad ever. She loved playing Bingo, watching Wheel of Fortune and WWE, collecting frog figurines and doing puzzles. Josephine worked hard but loved to look pretty and going to the salon and getting her hair and nails done was a regular ritual. She loved good food and you never had to ask her twice to go to Lee’s Restaurant for her favorite fried chicken and stewed tomatoes. More than anything, though, Josephine loved to be home with her family and her grandchildren all who considered her home to be their second home, a place where they were welcomed with opened arms and showered with so much love.

Josephine leaves behind the following family members to cherish her memory: daughters: Charlotte Chatham (Gregory), Shirley Ann Flemer (Charles), Teresa Lynn Lewis (Willie), Joanie Wilkins (Troy); beloved grandchildren: Dr. Danielle Sisson Jones (P.J.), Crystal Conley, Dawn Lewis, Paige Conley, James P. Clark (Amanda), Matthew Chatham (Angie), Julie Randalls (Steve), Stacy Foster (Brandon), Amy Kilmon, Thomas Lewis (Catherine), Katie Lewis (Connor), Hannah Lewis (Johnny), Jessica Johnson (Jerry), Shaniya Via (Nathan), Morgan Wilkins (Jacob); sister Mary Betty Dunaway; and many loving nieces and nephews. Josephine is also survived by her twenty- three great-grandchildren.

Preceding Josephine in death are her parents; her husband; her beloved children Ricky Wayne Sisson and Ruby Lee Conley; her siblings: Evelyn Warwick, Charles Hale and George Hale; her granddaughter Melissa Renee Clark; and her baby great-grandson Easton. What a joyful reunion in Heaven they must all be having.

A memorial service for Josephine will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the Welch Marks Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Although floral tributes to Josephine are much appreciated, if you would like you may make a donation to either the Alzheimer’s Association, at www.alz.org or to the Callao Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 39, Callao, VA 22435 in lieu of flowers.
