Obituary for Hilda Gertrude Fones (McKenney)

Hilda Gertrude Fones, 94, of Montross, Virginia, passed away on April 9, 2022. She was born on March 10, 1928 to the late Dempsey McKenney and Eunice Landman McKenney. Hilda married William Hampton Fones, Sr. and together they raised eleven children. She was very family oriented and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

Hilda retired after 24 years as a seamstress at Levi Strauss. She was loved by the community and people that surrounded her. She had a passion for cooking large meals for her family and friends. She would have at least thirty people gather for Sunday lunch every week. Hilda was very particular about caring for her yard and loved her flowers.

Hilda is survived by her sons, Cleveland Hampton Fones (Tish), William Howard Fones (Sue), Clarence Thomas Fones (Patsy), and Ronald Frank Fones; her daughters, Gladys Mae Foley (John), Linda Gertrude King, Mary Ann Jones (Jimmy), Betty Jean Burnette, Eunice Diane Kilman, and Frances Rita Balderson (Calvin); her 22 grandchildren; and her 53 great-grandchildren.

Hilda is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Roger Elwood Fones, and her brother Dempsey Edward McKenney.

A funeral service will be held at Nomini Baptist Church on Tuesday, April 12, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Steve Taylor officiating. Family will receive friends on Monday, April 11, 2022 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Welch Funeral Home- Montross Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family would like donations in honor of Hilda to be sent to the Westmoreland County Volunteer Rescue Squad - P.O. Box 37, Mount Holly, Virginia or Hospice of Virginia – 1928 Tappahannock Blvd., Tappahannock, Virginia 22560.
