Obituary for Dianne Elizabeth Thorn (Nunnally)

The Northern Neck of Virginia has lost some sparkle and style. Dianne Elizabeth Nunnally Thorn, known to all as Di, joined her Heavenly Father on March 29, 2022, surrounded by her loving family in Warsaw, Virginia. Di was born February 21, 1943, to Martha and Raleigh Nunnally in Richmond, Virginia as the oldest of four. Generous with her time and talents, she was always willing to spearhead fundraisers for different organizations, including establishing the first hospital south of the James, Chippenham Hospital. In 1970, she was recognized by Outstanding Young Women of America for her accomplishments. After moving to the Northern Neck in 1975, her attention turned to her other talents – design and decorating. With an entrepreneurial spirit, in 1981, Nunnally’s Floors and Decorating was launched. Working with close friends and family, a thriving local business was built. Known for her beauty, style, and kindness, many in the area welcomed Di into their homes for her decorating advice and design ideas. A gourmet cook and talented entertainer, so many within the community were graciously welcomed into her beautiful home and gardens, called Maple Shade, for weddings, showers, and celebrations. Di was a devoted Christian and took a very active role at St. John’s Episcopal Church as a licensed lay reader of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia, a chalice bearer, and a member of the Episcopal Church Women and The Order of the Daughters of the King. Di also sponsored many godchildren. While Alzheimer’s took from Di all the things we loved most about her, we will cherish the memories we hold dear. We find comfort knowing she is dancing to beach music with the angels. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 61 years, Larry, her children Kem Thorn and Jamie Thorn (Faith), four grandchildren (Jake Martin, Justin Thorn, Alivia Thorn, and Erin Thorn), a great grandchild (Ashlee Martin), a brother, Raleigh “Bubba”, and two dedicated sisters, Cheryl Nunnally and Becki Patterson, who provided such loving care to her over the last few years. The family would like to give a special thanks to Vel, Donna, Jean, and Lucy for their skilled care and companionship. Funeral services will take place at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Tappahannock, Virginia on Saturday, April 9, 2022, at 11:00 am. The family will accept visitors at 10:00 am in the Parrish Hall. In lieu of flowers and while observing Lent, donations can be made to the Riverside Hospice.
